Fashion has always been and always will be a competitive industry, but the success of another can be an inspiration to anyone, especially fashionistas. To read about a successful fashion entrepreneur or startup is not everyday news but when it makes the news, ears prick up and eyes gleam because someone else’s success gives us that spontaneous boost we need to simply get on with it. And that’s exactly what TILLY AND THE BUTTONS did.
Sitting at work one day, Tilly felt a sudden urge to just make something and on a whim
decided to sign up to a sewing class. Reviving her childhood passion for making
things, Tilly fell in love with sewing which eventually turned into a mild
obsession. With a passion for sewing and
no one around her to share her interest, Tilly started a blog sharing her
creativity and knowledge with fellow virtual sewing bees. Tilly’s dream was to
inspire and show others the pleasures of dressmaking. By making our own clothes
Tilly wanted to highlight that people could control their own style, as well as
being more aware of where their clothes come from. With us often being branded
a ‘throwaway generation’, whereby fashion trends only last a short while and
once we are done with it, out grown it or sick of it, we throw it away or
sometimes give it away. We often don’t think that with a few stitches and man
hours something new could be born.
Tilly’s overall aim is to school people (and perhaps those
who participate in this throwaway culture) on how to look good and dress well
on a budget. And to push her entrepreneurial spirit further, Tilly has even
written a book entitled ‘Love At First Stitch’
which happens to be a top seller on Amazon.
So what makes Tilly different?
With so many classes and tutorials available on how to make
clothes, they are often deemed overwhelmingly convoluted and technical in
language, with many perhaps finding it difficult to follow and learn from them.
Tilly however uses her blog to
make lessons both fun and fulfilling especially as most of her customers are in
their late 20’s and are looking for just that. Tilly’s sowing guides are jargon
free and most importantly, simply put, showing each step as a photo with
everything detailed as if each person was a beginner.
Tilly’s way of doing things has certainly captured people’s
attention not to mention her featuring in The Guardian and The New York Times,
as well as many other publications.
